Deepfakes: Harm or Benefit?

Résumé

This article details the ethical implications of deepfake technology. An initial survey of the machinery of deepfakes leads into a discussion of pornography as a case study of the way in which harms can accrue in the wake of this technology. Risk management techniques are also detailed. The author concludes that unless risk management strategies reache a permissible threshhold, the harms of deepfake technology outweigh the benefits.
