grew from a single shelf of books to what

Twelve women founded BookWoman as The
Common Woman Bookstore in Austin, Texas
in 1976. After several moves, BookWoman
is still in Austin and is the last feminist
bookstore in Texas. Their website allows

Initially founded in 1974, Charis became
Charis Books & More in 1996 when it opened
its non-profit arm, Charis Circle, in

Streelekha

is a feminist bookstore based in Bangalore,
South India. It is a sister concern of
Vimochana, an activist organisation based
in the same city. The women at Vimochana
and Streelekha have been working in and
around Karnataka for the last 17 years,
mostly to protest and defend the rights
of women wherever and whenever they have
