Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Submission Guidelines and Timeline.
  • Anonymize your submission by removing your name from all pages except the OJS submission form or a separate title page submitted through OJS.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Format your text double-spaced with page numbers at the top right of each page's header.
  • Submit your paper in .doc or .docx format.
  • Please use appropraite and consistent citation styles throughout your paper. Refer to submission guidelines for citatation style and usage.

Author Guidelines

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: 

Thank you for considering submitting your work to our journal, POLIS! Please refer to the guidelines outlined below for descriptors regarding general submissions. We’re glad you’re here!

General Guidelines:

  • We accept submissions from undergraduate students enrolled at SFU. 
  • We are an interdisciplinary journal and we seek out a wide variety of topics in the social sciences. 
  • Collaborative submissions are welcome, but all authors must be undergraduate students.
  • Submissions must be original and not previously published elsewhere.
  • While multiple submissions are allowed, generally, only one paper per author will be selected for publication.

Submission Requirements:

  • Papers must be written in English.
  • Standard Canadian English spelling will be used.
  • Accepted file formats include PDF (.pdf), Word Document (.doc, .docx), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and OpenDocument (.odf). 

Formatting Guidelines:

  • Papers should adhere to Chicago 17 formatting, including Times New Roman font, double-spacing, 12-point font size, and 1-inch (2.54cm) margins.
  • To facilitate blind review, use your initials instead of your full name on the title page. 
  • Include a title page with the class you wrote the paper for, the professor that taught the course, and the semester which you took the class in. 
  • File name should be formatted like this: <SHORT TITLE> <SEMESTER>, e.g. "Algorithms of Mass Destruction Summer 2024"
  • Please include a 100-150 word abstract with five keywords. 
  • Attach the assignment guidelines in a seperate file. 

Length and Content:

  • Submissions should be between 2000 and 5000 words (8 - 15 pages).
  • While there is flexibility, please aim for conciseness and clarity in your arguments and explanations.

Originality and Rights:

  • All content must be original, and you must have the rights to use any external material, 
  • including proper citations and permissions for reuse.
