The articles and briefings included in this new issue of the Journal of Intelligence, Conflict, and Warfare explore several areas of the current global environment such as security threats emerging from the formation of specific groups and their ideologies, strategic threats over the horizon, threats sprouting or reinforced by social media and technology, and the potential of strategic warning intelligence as a tool for Canada’s security intelligence agencies.
These articles reflect different areas of concern, but together they demonstrate the power of critical reasoning, rigorous research, and solutions-oriented thinking. This issue is also a reminder that understanding a specific security threat often depends on how well we understand a specific group’s formation, evolution, leadership patterns, and culture; that Violent Transnational Social Movements (VTSMs) must be tracked; and that analysts must sometimes rely on limited background intelligence. As the scholarly debate about critical security issues continues to unfold, the Editors hope these Critical Explorations of New Security Threats carry the discussion forward.
