Abstract

My study looks at the gambling laws from the English draft code in 1877 to the legalization seen in 1985. My study aims to see how gambling laws have changed and how the media portrayed gambling within five years of key years. My research will be qualitative and will be done via content analysis. I will be employing a Marxist ideology to show how gambling laws transformed into an economic tool to achieve revenue generation, and the impact the legal changes had on society, seen through the media portrayals. For my research, I will be using Hansard to break down legal debates on gambling within the key legal periods. Historical newspapers will be reviewed during the same legal periods of Hansard. My research will show that the change in gambling laws impacted media portrayals and show that gambling laws are connected to Marxist ideology.
